Conceptions |
| Security Quilt As I worked on Conceptions, information hit the news about pthalates, the chemicals found in soft plastics which disrupt the endocrine system and can cause drastic changes in hormone production. Many children's toys and pacifiers were quickly pulled from store shelves. I found an anonymously made 1940's quilt for three dollars in a garage sale, and began sewing rubbery xerox transfers to it. The transfers contained information I'd gleaned from the net about pthalates and other environmental poisons - pesticides, herbicides, food preservatives. I then collected - with the help of many women friends - sixty pacifiers (some of which were the kind taken off the market) and sewed each of them to the quilt. |
