This piece was a celebration, a charm and a meditation.
It was about acknowledging and appreciating a young arbutus tree. The 101 small brass bells were placed all over the tree and rang quietly when the wind blew. The sound of a bell brings a moment of alertness. We pay attention. Something is happening... what? We listen with our whole self, turn our heads, open our eyes and notice what is occurring. The tiny bells in this arbutus tree have the softest of chimes – almost like birdsong. They can only be heard by passers-by. They were all removed at the end of summer. I used soft copper wire to hang them with and after I gently untwisted it, there was no trace of the project left on the branches |
