Flower Circle
made by the community of Saltspring Island. Everyone brought or were given flowers. Everyone filled their own bowls and added them to the circle 600 bowls, dozens of people, and thousands of flowers a day of sunshine, welcoming the summer The idea for a flower circle was given to me by my friend and colleague c.j.fleury, who has created flower petal mandalas with her community in Wakefield, Quebec and in Ottawa, Ontario. Her recipe for a community flower petal mandala can be found in the Ontario Arts Council's Community Arts Workbook. cj was the first person I met who knew about the rich world of Kolam and Rangoli in India, Infiorata in Italy, and alfombras de floras in Guatemala. Since then I have researched flower traditions all over the world, and continue to discover more. If you are interested, try looking at the human flower project, a site filled with floral customs around the world. |
